These photo essays show moments from some of my favorite 2- to 3-day wanderings. A few were portions of a longer trip, but most happened over a typical weekend while holding a normal full-time job. Though I'd love to have the freedom to take off for a month at a time, exploring some far corner of the planet on a whim, I'm constantly amazed at how much can be done in a single weekend.

South Dakota

Visited Badlands National Park after a big snowstorm and made a few stops in Nebraska and Eastern Colorado on the way home.

Buena Vista Winter Trip

January weekend exploring up and down Colorado Highway 24 between Buena Vista and Leadville.

Southwest Colorado with Family

Unfortunately this would be the last road trip for Otis the Minivan; the long dirt road to our campsite was apparently a bit much for his aging transmission...

Crested Butte

My first time in Crested Butte. We spent a lot of the weekend exploring a creek behind our campsite and finding several stunning waterfalls and hammock spots.

Telluride with the GOTS

In August of 2017, the Grand Old Timers spent a weekend camping driving down to and exploring around Telluride and the San Juan Mountains.

Seattle and the Cascades

The family all met up to explore Seattle and the North Cascade Mountains in June. It was a particularly hot and dry summer up in the Pacific Northwest.

Twin Lakes Camping

Excited that the mountain lakes had finally melted, we rented a couple inflatable whitewater kayaks (the only kinds we could find) and spent a lazy weekend paddling around Twin Lakes, napping in hammocks, and stargazing.

Northwest Slovenia

I spent about 3 days wandering around Lake Bled, Triglav National Park, and a little bit of Eastern Italy. This was my third trip to Slovenia and I was able to slow down a bit more and dig deeper beyond the main tourist attractions.

Soca Valley

In May 2017, I spent three and half days exploring the Soča River Valley on the Eastern flanks of the Alps. Similar in color to the lakes of the Canadian Rockies, the Soča gets its hue from dissolved limestone, rather than glacial sediment.

Great Sand Dunes Road Trip

Fly fishing at Deckers, then a bit of a spontaneous road trip down to Great Sand Dunes National Park, over to Creede and the San Juans, and back home.

First camping Trip of 2017

It took us 5 or 6 times to finally find a place that was open for the season and free of snow. We probably jumped the gun a bit, but cabin fever is a serious condition in the mountains...

South Park and Buena Vista

Explored around Colorado's Collegiate Peaks for the weekend. Got distracted on my way to Buena Vista with some amazing light in South Park and spent the evening running around chasing the light.
